Peruvian Passport: Ranking, Types, and Visa-Free Access

The passport is the travel document that provides information about a person’s identity and nationality. Likewise, it has the function of enabling entry to a foreign country and allows free transit within it.

According to the annual report prepared by the consulting company Henley & Partners, the Peruvian passport is not among the most powerful globally, but it is in the top 10 in Latin America.

The national passbook is positioned 36th in the world ranking and ninth in the region, allowing citizens to access 142 countries, without the need for a visa.

In this way, the Peruvian document climbs two positions this year, since in the 2023 report it occupied position 38 in the general list and only allowed entry to 136 countries.

A nivel regional

Chile leads the global ranking, placing 15th, with access to 177 nations. They are followed by Argentina and Brazil, in 16th and 17th place, respectively.

Then there is Mexico and Uruguay, ranking 23rd and 26th in the world, with entry to 161 and 156 countries without the need for a visa.

The top ten is completed by Costa Rica (28), Panama (31), Paraguay (33), Peru (36) and Guatemala (38).

At the global level

Beyond the economies of Latin America, the most powerful passports are between Europe and Asia. In first position, all with visa-free access to 194 jurisdictions, are France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Singapore and Spain.

According to Christian Kaelin, president of Henley & Partners, although throughout the history of the ranking the trend has been towards greater freedom of travel, the gap between those at the top and bottom of the index is now wider than ever. .

“The average number of destinations that travelers can access visa-free has almost doubled from 58 in 2006 to 111 in 2024. However, as we enter the new year, the top-ranked countries can now travel to the astonishing This is 166 more visa-free destinations than Afghanistan, which is at the bottom of the ranking with access to only 28 visa-free countries,” he said.

Passport types

In Peru there are currently four types of passports. However, only the “ordinary” can be freely requested by citizens. The others are delivered only in specific cases established by law.

The document is issued in the national territory by Migrations, while abroad it is issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the consular offices of Peru.

What are the others? The “special passport” is only for officials and people who hold certain positions in the State, who travel on official missions, among others.

While the diplomatic passport is given only to ambassadors, members of the diplomatic service, presidents and their spouses, former presidents and other authorities during their term.

Additionally, there are “other passports” established by international conventions or agreements.
