Pervasive ‘Exchanging Tactic’ in Soraepo-gu Fish Market: Legless Blue Crabs Controversy

“Among the 60,000 won worth, only two have legs attached”

It has been argued that merchants in Soraepo-gu, Incheon, who appealed with great enthusiasm to eradicate consumer inconvenience and complaints such as ‘mixed sales’, ‘overcharged prices’, and ‘hygiene problems’, are still continuing the ‘exchanging tactic’.

On the 24th, in an online community, a message was posted by Mr. A saying that he had recently visited Sorae Pogu and bought blue crabs. He ran from Yongin to Soraepogu to buy fresh shrimp and fish sauce that can only be purchased in June.

Mr. A said that following eating, his younger brother, who went with him, bought blue crabs sold in front of the restaurant, so he bought them. He said, “The blue crabs shown at the store had legs attached to them and were full of eggs. My brother bought male crabs worth 50,000 won, and I bought 2 kg of female crabs for 60,000 won.”

According to Mr. A, the merchant who sold blue crabs said, “Recently, ‘legless blue crabs’ have caused a stir in Sorae Port, but it has nothing to do with us.”

However, the goods received were completely different from what the merchant said. Many of the blue crabs I saw at home had no legs. Only two of them have full legs. One in particular had only one leg. Mr. A expressed regret, saying, “I was a Hogu who believed that the merchant representative bowed deeply and apologized that he would change.”

As consumer complaints regarding the solicitation and gouging that took place at the Soraepogu Fish Market continued, merchants held up pickets with phrases such as “recovering customer trust,” “safety management impregnable,” and “observing hygiene and cleanliness” on the 14th. He went around and appealed for the need for change in the Soraepogu market.

At the time, Shin Yeong-chul, chief of Sorae Fishing Village, said, “Recently, the ‘Crab Leg Incident’ led us to hold a midnight competition. We will continue to educate people so that there will be no unsavory incident once more.”

Han Sang-rin, a professor of business administration at Hanyang University, said in an interview with a media outlet, “Local governments are cracking down on price marking whenever something similar happens, but they can’t control merchants’ greed.” It is also a way to attract ethical sales from merchants by promoting ‘good merchants’.”
