Perwez Water Collection Crisis: Farmers’ Concerns and Relocation Plans

2023-12-03 13:30:00

Liters and liters of water are flowing and will continue to flow for another forty days, on a consolidation path located behind the Delhaize store in Perwez. A situation which surprises passers-by and angers certain farmers concerned…

“We are carrying out tests on new collection wells,” announces Jordan Godfriaux, mayor of Perwez. A well was tested last year, a new one is being analyzed this year. All the elements are favorable to relocation to this location. We still have to analyze the catchment protection zone, before defining the plans and the price of the installation.”

For the moment, water collection is done in an urbanized area. The water is of good quality but there is a risk in this location, linked to the presence of homes, their oil tanks, individual treatment plants and other septic tanks. “Zoning is also not very far away, with certain businesses potentially at risk,” adds Jordan Godfriaux.

It happens that citizens, thinking they are doing the right thing, move it to the next field

The authorities therefore wish to relocate the catchment to an agricultural area. “It is a legal measure, we must determine the radius to be protected from phytosanitary products in particular, in order to avoid the slightest pollution of the new catchment site.” A project which should reduce the risks of pollution for the water distributed in part of the town.

This is what explains this spilled water. “The inBW has forbidden us to send this water down the drain. The treatment plant would risk no longer functioning properly with all this quantity of water.” A pipe was therefore placed on a consolidation road. “It’s a fairly simple pipe to move, sometimes citizens, thinking they’re doing the right thing, move it into the next field. We have already spoken with the nearest farmer, who received compensation for sowing 15 ares, the affected area. Then we see on a case-by-case basis.”

It is indeed difficult to anticipate where the pipe will be placed by passers-by. “This Friday morning, a farmer contacted me and I replied that an inventory would be made, to proceed with compensation afterwards.”

The big concern is that this situation is likely to continue. For the tests to be carried out correctly, the water must be pumped for around forty days. “The difficulty is that this pumping cannot be stopped. This must be done continuously. The fact that there is intervention by a citizen has already caused the pump to stop.”

“There is no right time”

In the end, we risk ending up with around fifty days of activity. What makes some people groan is the timing. Whether for farmers or road users (cyclists and others), the water could very well freeze with the prevailing negative temperatures. “I think unfortunately there is no good time,” said Jordan Godfriaux. We received the permit, we designated the project author to carry out the tests, and we are moving forward. The sooner we are ready, the sooner the collection site will be operational. Our desire is to move as quickly as possible.”

The mayor says he is ready to meet the aggrieved operators.
