The La Perla Animal Welfare and Adoption Center has a maximum capacity of 1,700 animals. However, it currently houses three thousand. Given the increase in the number of rescues of abused or abandoned pets, councilors met to discuss the situation at the shelter.
“We have to promote a public policy of responsible adoption, which is something continuous, something permanent, because the only form of population control that exists in an animal welfare center is responsible adoption,” said Juan Ramón Jiménez, councilor of Medellín.
Although there is a 15% increase in animal adoptions, rescues carried out exceed 30%, which warns of a possible increase in the abandonment of pets in the city.
The District Council calls for awareness about adoptions, which this holiday season could be a meaningful gift for pet lovers or children.
However, they warn that many families make hasty decisions and do not consider responsible ownership or the necessary requirements to provide them with adequate care, which can lead to situations of abuse or abandonment.
