The snow was soft, and the strong wind drove the leaves of the surrounding trees onto the slope. The course therefore looked like stracciatella ice cream – and it was not to Lena Dürr’s taste. With an angry scream, the best German slalom rider at the World Cup at the “Bärenberg” near Zagreb acknowledged her weak run in the finals, with which she dropped from sixth to eleven.
“It was a fight from top to bottom,” complained Dürr. Especially in the second run she didn’t really hit the very deep track. “That annoys me because there would have been more in it.”
Petra Vlhova coped best with the adverse conditions. In the second run under floodlights, she maintained her superior lead from the first run in front of Mikaela Shiffrin (USA) and at the same time secured the title of “Snow Queen”, which is traditionally awarded in the Croatian capital. “It’s too warm here. The grooves are deep. We’ll see how I get through,” the Slovakian complained after the first run.

At the end of the extremely challenging race, Vlhova was 0.50 seconds ahead of her great rival Shiffrin, who had previously missed two races due to a corona infection. “I drove well – mainly because I haven’t been able to train for the last ten days,” said the 26-year-old, who successfully defended her lead in the overall World Cup after only two sessions. Vlhova, winner of the fifth slalom of the season for the fourth time, is second.

Dürr was again unable to build on their strong performances in the first three slaloms of the season. After two third places and a fifth place, she only finished 18th in Lienz, Austria, before the turn of the year. On the unloved “Bärenberg”, she initially left the advantage of starting number two unused in the first run, in the final she lost ground again and was 3.33 seconds behind Vlhova in the end.
It wasn’t a good day for the German women anyway: In addition to Dürr, Jessica Hilzinger and Emma Aicher also qualified for the final of the top 30. There, however, Aicher threaded a gate pole on the target slope. Hilzinger took 21st place. Paulina Schlosser and Marlene Schmotz were eliminated in the first run.
