Petro would keep his promise and would not be a candidate again if he loses

Gustav Petro, presidential candidate of the Historical Pact, assured in September 2021 that he would withdraw from national politics if he did not arrive at the Casa de Nariño next Augustmonth in which the new head of state takes office.

“My political cycle would be closed, because I cannot become an eternal candidate. It would mean that a project has failed. That the exit agreed on fundamental reforms to live together in peace has failed”he indicated at the time.

His son Nicolás Petro even stated in an interview with Vicky in Week (more than a year ago) that the leader of Human Colombia would step aside if he lost the elections, because according to him “political cycles are coming to an end.”

“These are cycles of life and leadership, sooner or later, wears out. We have to wait for the results after 2022, but I feel that he considers that his cycle is over and it will be time to give space to the new leadership “he added.

After disputed the first round of the presidential elections, which were held on May 29, the Cordovan returned to refer to the issue and pointed out on W Radio, that his withdrawal from national politics will depend on the results of June 19, the date of the final elections.

The former mayor of Bogotá also took advantage of the moment and pointed out that, in the event that he is not elected president of Colombia, he would be willing to leave the path open to other people so that they can try to establish the change they have sought so much for.

“In all human activity there is a political attitude. We are human for that. I will always have a conception and a way of understanding things. In electoral politics, I think I have brought the forces of society to a point where power was disputed”he initially stated.

In addition, he added on the station that he and his team scared “those of power and corruption, but as has happened so many times in history, it was not possible. Then it will be up to other people, to other generations, and to young people”.

The candidate of the Historic Pact has run three times for the presidency of the Republic. The first time he was in fourth place (2010), the second he lost against Iván Duque (2018) and this would be his third chance to be the president of the Colombians.

The latest survey, published by the National Consulting Center (CNC) for CM&, showed that Gustavo Petro had a slight decline for the first time and would be technically tied with Rodolfo Hernández.

According to the data exposed by the poll, the leader of Human Colombia would obtain 39% of the votes in the second round. Likewise, he indicated that the engineer would get 41% of the votes.

This comparison exercise of the electoral result of May 29, and the CNC survey, shows a trend compared to the vote next Sunday, June 19.

In the opinion of some analysts, the former mayor of Bucaramanga has more options to grow, while the candidate of the Historical Pact may have reached his ceiling.
