PFA Threatens Legal Action Over Increasing Number of Football Matches

The Professional English Footballers’ Union (PFA) says legal proceedings could be launched to deal with the large and growing number of matches per season.

What if the thorny problem of the overcrowded football calendar was resolved in court? The English professional players’ union informs Sky SportsFriday December 29, that legal proceedings could soon be launched if FIFA and other governing bodies do not react.

“I feel like we’ve reached a point where people are willing to take legal action, where people are willing to take tangible steps on the ground to try to solve the problem, because it’s “a sad situation. I think it’s a defeat for football when players have to take the law into their own hands because they don’t feel protected,” said Maheta Molango, director general of the Professional Footballers’ Association in England (PFA).

86 games per season?

“I think the players are now ready to take a strong position. The authorities who are supposed to protect the players and the matches are not doing so. They are creating more competitions, more revenue, to the detriment of the players. (… ) As fans, we want to see the best players on the pitch and at their best. And currently, with the current schedule, it is physically and humanly impossible,” added Maheta Molango, also a member of the board of directors of the international players’ union FIFPRO.

Footballers playing at top clubs in England could well play 86 games from next season, given the introduction of the new FIFA Club World Cup and the start of the new Champions League format ( two more matches before the knockout phase and two additional matches for the play-offs who want to qualify for the round of 16).

One of the demands of the players’ unions concerns the establishment of a compulsory break of 28 days between two seasons.
