Pharmaceutical flagship in decline, how France is losing the export game

Pharmaceutical products have never recorded a trade deficit in France. Between 2014 and 2022, they achieved an average of 3.7 billion euros in trade surplus, with even a peak of 6.2 billion in 2019. Last year again, this manufacturing sector, which mainly includes medicines , but also blood derivatives and veterinary products, has retained its place among the flagships of the exporting industrial sectors, but far from its performance standards.

The sector’s trade balance has deteriorated significantly, with a surplus of only 384 million euros. Inexorably, the export and import curves converge. In 2023, imports reached a record level of 36.76 billion euros, up 4.4%, while exports fell by 2.8%, to 37.14 billion. Enough to fear a shift into the red in the future.
