For a few days, patients have the option of sending their prescriptions directly to pharmacists from the secure “My health space” messaging system. In addition to responding to ever-increasing digital expectations, this new communication feature aims to simplify exchanges between healthcare professionals and patients.

A new secure messaging service for patients and pharmacists

We mentioned it in a previous article: since July 2022, each French person has had a personal health space and an email address made up of the thirteen digits of their social security number followed by “@patient.msante.fr”.

For the past few days, this device has now offered patients the possibility of communicating directly with their pharmacist from the website or the mobile application of “My health space”. From this secure health messaging service (MSS), patients can communicate with the pharmacist and send him their prescriptions directly. This exchange system was developed by the Health Insurance in consultation with the unions of pharmacists and the Ministerial Delegation for digital health.

To know ! The patient can send a prescription or a message to any pharmacy in which he obtained reimbursed drugs during the year.

How does secure patient/pharmacist messaging work?

In practice, to be able to send their prescription directly to the pharmacist, the patient must first activate their personal account “My health space” and log in. Then just do the following:

  1. Look in the “My health documents” section for the prescription he has submitted or the one transmitted by a health professional.
  2. Choose a pharmacy from those listed in “My health space”
  3. Write and send your message to the pharmacist, attaching your prescription.

To know ! All prescription formats are accepted: from the prescription placed by the doctor on the shared medical file to the photograph of the prescription by the patient.

As for the pharmacist, when he receives a patient’s email, he sees a small red envelope appear at the top of the screen of each computer in his pharmacy. Philippe Besset, President of the Federation of Pharmaceutical Unions of France therefore strongly encourages his colleagues to regularly monitor the new mailbox on their screens: “Pharmacists must be aware of this innovation and be attentive to the appearance of the signal on their screen. Otherwise, they could miss an order or message from a patient.” But to receive and consult the prescriptions shared by users via the “My health space” messaging system, pharmacies must be equipped with Ségur software with secure health messaging (MSSanté).

To know ! Secure health messaging is referenced in the health directory managed by the Digital Health Agency.

What are the benefits of this new messaging system?

In addition to responding to ever-increasing digital expectations from the general public, this new communication feature tends to simplify communication between healthcare professionals and patients. The various exchanges being centralized on the messaging system, it will indeed be easier to access the patient’s history if necessary.

For pharmacists, this new messaging system is synonymous with time savings since it allows them to prepare orders upstream and optimize inventory management.

Finally, what about the protection of the data exchanged on this messaging system? The Health Insurance indicates that the “My health space” messaging respects a high level of protection and confidentiality. This new service should make it possible to limit the use of private mailboxes which are, in fact, less secure. We bet that this new feature will strengthen the bonds of trust between patients and healthcare professionals!
