Pharmacists can prescribe birth control pills in Prince Edward Island

2023-07-11 09:03:52

Islanders have been able to contact provincial pharmacists since Saturday to obtain a prescription for a contraceptive or medication to treat impetigo and shingles.

PEI Pharmacists Association executive director Erin Mackenzie says the change was necessary.

The public made it clear to us that this is what they wanted, she says.

More than 30,000 residents of Prince Edward Island still do not have a family doctor in 2023.

In order to provide them with better access to health care services, the government program Pharmacie Plus Î.-P.-É. is now focusing on a greater service offer in pharmacies.

Although the new service offer has only been in place for a few days, Erin Mackenzie says she has already received positive feedback from several islanders and pharmacists.

It’s a win-win situation for everyone, she concludes.
