Philadelphia Flyers social media staff members forgot to mute their microphones during a video press conference, embarrassing the organization.

On Tuesday, forward Garnet Hathaway spoke for the first time to members of the media assigned to cover his new team. A journalist, identified by several Internet users on Twitter as Giana Han, of the “Philadelphia Inquirer”, was however targeted by derogatory remarks following a question.

“Hello Garnet. For a veteran like you, I wondered what could attract you to a rebuilding team like the Flyers? she asked Hathaway.

“How many times is she going to ask that stupid question?” automatically replied in more offensive terms one of the employees of the Pennsylvania club, before the hockey player could even open his mouth.

It’s unclear whether the reporter or Hathaway heard the misplaced comment, but the Flyers quickly removed the video from their social media. They issued a press release in the early evening.

“Earlier today, our team’s social media account released a recording of a virtual press conference which included disrespectful remarks made by members of our social media staff. On behalf of the entire Flyers organization, I would like to apologize,” said general manager Keith Jones.

“Any form of disrespect towards journalists is unacceptable, especially when they are just doing their job. We have contacted the journalist and the media personally to express our regrets, and we will continue to promote an environment of mutual respect with the media.”

Jones is well placed to comment on this affair since after his playing career in the National League, he became an analyst for the NBC network and then TNT.
