Philippine President-elect Marcos faces street protests on holiday in Australia

MANILA (Archyde.com) – Philippine President-elect Ferdinand Marcos Jr. traveled to Australia on a private trip on Monday, drawing protesters on the streets of Melbourne, a spokesman for Philippine President-elect Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said.

 Marcos spokesman Vic Rodriguez told the media at a Manila press conference that Marcos received a call from Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison there to congratulate him on winning the presidential election.

“This is more of a personal trip… This is a much-needed rest and vacation for President-elect Bongbong (Pony Marcus’ nickname),” Rodriguez said. He also revealed that Marcus is scheduled to return to Manila on the 19th. .

During the period, a small group of Filipino protesters gathered on a sidewalk outside an apartment in central Melbourne, holding signs that read “Tax evaders are not welcome here” and “Tyrants are not welcome here”.

“It’s embarrassing for Filipinos,” Rodriguez said. “It’s not a Filipino trait to feel ashamed or embarrassed by a fellow Filipino in another country.”

Marcos was the son of the former Philippine dictator Ferdinand Marcos, who was disgraced and overthrown by a mass uprising in exile. He died in Hawaii in 1989.

The Marcos family lived a well-known life of luxury but denied illegal misappropriation of billions of dollars in state assets. Central News Agency (translation)
