Phillies’ Middleton Agrees With Yankees’ Owner on MLB Spending

by

Philadelphia Phillies owner John Middleton publicly acknowledged the New York Yankees’ Hal Steinbrenner articulated a sentiment he shares regarding escalating financial commitments in Major League Baseball, according to statements made Monday.

Middleton’s comment came as the Phillies navigate another offseason potentially marked by significant player acquisitions, and amid speculation surrounding their pursuit of San Diego Padres outfielder Juan Soto. He indicated a shared concern with Steinbrenner about the sustainability of current spending trends, though he did not directly quote the Yankees owner. “Hal said it best when he addressed runaway spending,” Middleton stated, according to reports.

The Phillies owner’s remarks echo a previous instance in November 2019, when his comment about being willing to spend “stupid money” became a focal point of the offseason. That declaration, made at MLB owners’ meetings, reportedly attracted considerable attention from player agents and ultimately led to substantial investments in free agents, totaling over $400 million, though the team failed to reach the playoffs that season.

Middleton now appears to be tempering expectations, emphasizing a focus on acquiring players who will demonstrably improve the team’s performance. “Mantras are a lot of fun,” he said, “But we just want to acquire players that will craft us meaningfully better. All of our efforts this offseason will be geared toward that.”

The Yankees, meanwhile, have faced scrutiny over their own financial approach. Recent analysis of the team’s revenue and payroll figures suggests a prioritization of profit margins, despite public statements about budgetary constraints. A comparison of 2024 revenues ($728 million) and 2025 payrolls revealed the Yankees ranked 11th in the league in payroll-to-revenue ratio, behind teams like the Dodgers and Mets.

Hal Steinbrenner’s past comments regarding “unsustainable” payroll levels and concerns about the Dodgers’ spending have drawn criticism from fans and observers who question the team’s commitment to fielding a competitive roster. The Yankees’ owner has also expressed reservations about exceeding the luxury tax threshold.

As of Monday, the Phillies’ pursuit of Juan Soto remained uncertain, with Middleton acknowledging the Yankees’ strong position in the bidding process. The Dodgers, owned by Mark Walter, who has a net worth of $3.6 billion, are also considered a major contender for Soto’s services. Steinbrenner’s net worth is estimated at $3.8 billion.

The annual November meetings of MLB owners concluded on Wednesday in Texas, with no immediate announcements regarding the Phillies’ plans for the remainder of the offseason. The team’s general manager, Matt Klentak, recently stated, “No questions asked, it is time to win right now,” a sentiment echoed by Middleton.
