Two philosophy professors teaching respectively in Rouen and near Marseilles were suspended for three months. The Ministry of Education said on Saturday that the two teachers had exceeded their “duty of reserve”.
Franklin Nyamsi, teacher in Rouen, and René Chiche, teacher in Marseille, were suspended from their duties as philosophy teachers. “The sanction was the subject of a strict procedure, motivated by the breach of the duty of reserve” explained the Ministry of National Education.
René Chiche, suspended since mid-April, was known in the teaching community for his very critical remarks on a school which he considers to be adrift. He is also vice-president of Action et Démocratie, a minority union made up of teachers.
On Twitter, he reacted to his layoff: “According to the Minister, my public expression and the audience of my remarks undermine the image and reputation of the public service of National Education”.
A decision taken to court but rejected by the administrative court of Rouen
The joint committee, which met as a disciplinary council a few weeks ago, had criticized him for highlighting “his quality as a teacher in his public speeches”. In addition, the commission also considered that “the frequency of these remarks is likely to impact the proper functioning of the public service”.
For his part, Franklin Nyamsi, suspended since March, believes he has been sanctioned for his “criticism against France’s African policy” and spoke of “political persecution” according to a publication published at the end of the month. ‘april.
Moreover, the professor took the decision to court in order to challenge it, but the Rouen administrative court dismissed his request on Thursday May 4. “Without the slightest justification for his decision, an administrative judge in France rejected our appeal against the exclusion from teaching duties that I have suffered since March 14, 2023,” commented Franklin Nyamsi.
The association of professors of philosophy of public education (APPEP), published a press release this Friday, May 4 in which it writes that it only has “fragmentary data” about these two cases. However, this data would be “sufficient to cause the legitimate concern of teachers”.
