The CHSLD Boisvert in Baie-Comeau is launching an appeal to the community. He is looking for volunteers to come and keep seniors company and make a difference in the lives of the most vulnerable people. Meet new people and create enriching connections, that’s what awaits you at CHSLD Boisvert.

Located at 70 avenue Mance, the long-term care establishment welcomes residents who require special attention and would like to benefit from the help of generous people.

“We really need reinforcement for individual activities with residents. Currently, I find myself with five volunteers, but before the pandemic, we were a team of 20 to 25 volunteers,” says Samuel Kerr, activities manager at CHSLD Boisvert.

“They were quite elderly volunteers, they did not want to take a risk for their health and make themselves sick,” he adds. Indeed, following the COVID-19 pandemic, many volunteers had to give up their activities for health reasons and protect themselves.

“When you become a volunteer, you help maintain the autonomy of users. We help them reduce their moments of anxiety for those who are the most lonely and preserve their memory for people who have Alzheimer’s. There are a lot of residents who don’t have family and are on their own, that can bring a lot of anxiety, so it helps a lot to have volunteers,” explains Mr. Kerr.

As a volunteer, you can provide valuable support to activities organized by the team whether by participating in games, helping out at special events or simply offering a listening ear.

“We organize a lot of activities, brunches, bingo, bowling activities. We have Santa Claus who will come on December 25 to give gifts. The holiday decoration also on each floor is thanks to the volunteers in Boisvert. Otherwise, I am on my own to organize big events which are almost impossible to do alone,” says Samuel Kerr.

This unique experience will allow you to grow, learn and make a real difference in the lives of CHSLD Boisvert residents.

“We must not think that we have everything we need. Having volunteers helps us enormously and is a big need. We are trying to do promotion to help residents in a difficult time,” concluded the activity attendant at CHSLD Boisvert.
