Physical medicine and rehabilitation (MPR): a little-known medical specialty

2023-09-10 10:24:00

Martin Ducret, doctor and journalist at Daily Doctor, discusses today MPR, physical medicine and rehabilitation. Matthieu Lartot, the France 2 journalist who comments on the Rugby World Cup, had his leg amputated two and a half months ago, due to the recurrence of bone cancer (osteosarcoma). Hospitalized in a specialized clinic, he benefited from a prosthesis and rehabilitation which allowed him to walk again quickly.

franceinfo: Through the journey of this personality, did you want to tell us about this little-known medical specialty, MPR, which aims to re-educate patients?

Martin Ducret : Yes, MPR means physical medicine and rehabilitation. It is a medical specialty which aims to restore the proper functioning of an organ or part of the body, secondary to a disability caused by an illness.

In fact, an MPR doctor is a sort of conductor who implements a care program adapted to the patient’s disability, so that he or she can regain the most harmonious quality of life possible. And if I say “conductor”, it’s because MPR doctors generally work in teams, in the hospital or clinic, with a multitude of paramedical specialists: nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists. , psychologists or even social workers.

What health problems are affected by MPR?

There are many diseases concerned, because it is a very transversal specialty. But the vast majority are diseases of the musculoskeletal system – which affect the bones, muscles and joints. This could be a patient with chronic disabling lower back pain, or a patient who has been the victim of a serious road accident.

In the case of Matthieu Lartot, it was because of an amputation that he was treated in an orthopedic rehabilitation center. He first benefited from nursing care to heal, then rehabilitation with physiotherapists and occupational therapists, to relearn how to walk with a prosthesis.

Are there also neurological diseases that are treated in MPR?

Yes, neurological diseases causing disability, such as multiple sclerosis or stroke. I also invite listeners to watch the film Patients, produced by singer Grand Corps Malade, available on platforms. It is an autobiographical film, where we follow the care of Grand Corps Malade, in a rehabilitation center, specialized in neurology following an accident responsible for paralysis of all four limbs. A valuable film for understanding the care journey of a patient with a disability.
