Physical versions for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S are not coming

Will there be physical releases of Resident Evil 2 Remake, Resident Evil 3 Remake and Resident Evil 7 for PlayStation 5 (PS5) and Xbox Series X/S following the next-gen updates? No. The clear answer came from Capcom, the game’s developer and publisher, themselves.

Earlier this month, Capcom confirmed that Resident Evil 7 and the remakes of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 would be coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S later this year with several visual and performance improvements. Now Capcom has come back to reveal some details.

Resident Evil 2/3/7: PS5 and Xbox Series X/S updates – All the important details summarized

In a recent series of tweets, the developer reiterated some already known details and once more stated that all scores of the 3 games are transferred from the PS4 and Xbox One to the PS5 or Xbox Series X/S. Separately purchased DLCs and DLCs included with Resident Evil 7 Gold Edition will also transfer.

If you have a physical copy of the games on previous-gen consoles, you can upgrade to a digital version of the current-gen – although your console will need a disc drive to do so, of course. Players who own a PS5 Digital Edition or an Xbox Series S are out of luck.

Capcom writes regarding it Twitter: “Players who own the physical edition of RE2, 3 and/or 7 can upgrade from PS4 to PS5 via digital upgrade or Xbox Smart Delivery at no additional cost. Please note that your console will need a disc drive to continue playing the physical editions of these games.”

No plans for physical releases

Meanwhile, Capcom confirms that there are currently no plans for a physical release of Resident Evil 2, 3 and 7 for current-gen consoles either. Whether those plans change later remains to be seen, but as things stand at the moment, when the three games release on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S later this year, they will only be available digitally.

Capcom also has important news for all PC gamers: All upgrade patches for Resident Evil 2, 3 and 7 will also be available for PC players – AT NO additional cost.
