Pink Floyd Announces 50th Anniversary Reissue of ‘Animals’ Album

Pink Floyd have announced a 50th anniversary reissue of their 1977 album Animals, set for release on January 22, 2027. The collection will be available in multiple formats, including a deluxe box set, one LP, two LP, two CD, Blu-Ray Audio, and digital editions.

The album, released on January 21, 1977, was recorded at the band’s own studio, Britannia Row, in Islington, which opened in 1975. Nick Mason reflected on the new studio, noting, It was very different. But I think it was good – although the result, sonically, was inevitably not quite as good, quite simply. But it was this thing of, we’d sort of done it all at Abbey Road – and that was great – but we wanted to build our own studio with this idea we’d build one that was very simple to operate. David Gilmour commented on the album’s sound, influenced by the changing musical mood of 1977, saying, The mood in music was changing in ’77. Punk music was hitting everything and I suspect that had a little bit of an influence on the way we were working on the Animals album. I mean it’s quite an aggressive, stripped-back album.

Deluxe Box Set Contents

The deluxe box set contains 3 LPs: the original 1977 album, the 2018 Remix by James Guthrie, and a disc of rarities. The rarities disc includes an unheard Roger Waters track titled ‘Young Nicholas Jon’, as well as previously unreleased early versions of ‘Sheep’ and ‘Dogs’. It also includes a 64-page hardback book with new sleeve notes from Jonathan Lethem, an interview with bootlegger Reinhard Hohlwein, and an excerpt from Aubrey “Po” Powell’s memoir. The set features a 2-disc set of the May 9, 1977 Oakland show and a Blu-Ray disc with the 2018 Remix in 5.1 and Dolby Atmos.

Releasing Unheard Music

The reissue includes a suite of rare and unheard music. The first track to be released is Sheep (Original Radio Edit), a four-and-a-half-minute, promo-only edit made for radio in 1977 that has never been commercially available. The 2LP and 2CD sets, as well as the digital release, will contain the original 1977 album plus rarities. The digital release also features the Oakland live show. The original album will be released on one LP in orange and sandstone colour variants.

Teasing Re-Release with Posters

Animals is known for its iconic album artwork featuring a pig floating above Battersea Power Station, created by Hipgnosis. Aubrey “Po” Powell described the power station as a capitalist monolith, crumbling at the core beneath the overbearing weight of greed, burgeoning bureaucracy and archaic infrastructure. The band has teased the re-release with social media posters featuring the phrase Oink, woof, baaa around London. The Animals 50 collection is available to preorder now.
