Diourbel, Oct 29 (APS) – A total of 1,644 awareness activities were carried out and 13,076 women screened for breast and cervical cancer throughout the country, during the 2023 edition of the campaign “Pink October”, revealed the Minister of Health and Social Action, Dr Marie Khémesse Ngom Ndiaye, on Sunday.
”The mobilization and self-sacrifice of health providers and community stakeholders made it possible, during this 2023 campaign, to obtain, at the national level, important results. We can cite the carrying out of 1,644 awareness activities and the screening of 13,076 women for breast and cervical cancer,” she declared.
Dr Marie Khémesse Ngom Ndiaye spoke on the occasion of the official closing ceremony of the “Pink October” campaign, organized in Diourbel, in the presence of several administrative, local and religious authorities.
She also reported on this occasion the treatment of 953 precancerous lesions of the cervix and 103 suspected cases of breast cancer, as well as the vaccination of 1,476 girls with HPV 1 and 2, to protect them of these two cancers.
”Pink October, much more than a campaign, is a moment of rallying, a call to action, a glimmer of hope for all people affected by cancer in general, and by breast and cervical cancer. of the uterus in particular,” she stressed.
This minus thus constitutes, according to the minister, ”the opportunity to promote early detection, care and support for patients with breast cancer or cervical cancer, as well as for families affected by these diseases, which constitute real public health problems.
In this regard, she is of the opinion that at this stage of the fight, ”information, support, early detection and treatment remain the most effective weapons to reduce the impacts of these cancers which affect women of all ages, from all backgrounds, and from all origins.”
According to him, ”the State of Senegal, which has made the fight against cancer a priority, has made a lot of efforts to prevent and reduce the burden of cancer on the general population, with particular emphasis on care of women”’, notably through ”the development of a national plan whose implementation has enabled significant progress (…).”
On this subject, she recalled ”the firm resolve of the authorities to continue working for a future where gynecological cancers will no longer be a threat to the community”. However, she specifies that ”the fight against cancer requires a multi-sectoral approach involving all the forces of our country to achieve the objectives.”
