Pioneering French Lithium Extraction Pilot Site Inaugurated by Eramet and Electricité de Strasbourg

DECRYPTION – Eramet and Electricité de Strasbourg inaugurated on Tuesday a pilot site for the extraction of this ore contained in brackish underground water.

Nothing suggests what is happening in Rittershoffen, about sixty kilometers from Strasbourg. In a few years, one of the biggest sites French lithium extraction could be installed here, far from all the clichés conveyed by the sector. Here, no mines, loader trucks… but a sort of large agricultural shed. It houses a pilot site for the extraction of lithium contained in thermal waters already exploited in geothermal energy by Électrcité de Strasbourg (ÉS). This Tuesday morning, the French mining group Eramet and ÉS formally inaugurated this industrial pilot.

The objective is to produce around 10,000 tonnes of lithium per year by 2030, enough to manufacture 250,000 batteries for electric vehicles.
