Google has introduced the Pixel Watch 5 alongside the Pixel 11 smartphone family, highlighting a new safety tool called Breathing Emergency Detection. According to CNET, the new feature is intended to help users when they are unable to help themselves rather than simply providing routine health data.

The capability relies on an AI-based algorithm that analyzes signals from the watch’s heart rate, motion, and altitude sensors. Francis Hoe, a product manager on Google’s Pixel Watch team, explained to Wired that the system uses advanced sensors—including a photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor, accelerometer, and barometer—running on-device to detect a persistent drop in oxygen saturation. Pramod Rudrapatna, Google senior product manager for health, told CNET that the optical sensor estimates blood oxygen levels using green, red, and infrared light, while the accelerometer checks for prolonged low movement and the barometer accounts for environmental factors like high altitude.
Alert Sequence and False Alarm Prevention
When the device detects signs of a potential emergency—such as those associated with choking, severe pneumonia, or an accidental drug overdose—it initiates a staged alert sequence. As detailed by T3, the watch first delivers a strong vibration and a full-screen notification. If the user does not respond, an audible warning begins alongside a 30-second countdown, giving the wearer 30 seconds to cancel the alert.
If the countdown expires without a response, a connected phone or LTE-enabled Pixel Watch can automatically call emergency services and alert emergency contacts. An automated message then informs the emergency operator that a possible breathing emergency has been detected, explains that the wearer is unresponsive, and provides their location.

To reduce false positives, the system ensures the wearer has not been asleep for more than 30 minutes during the detected incident, helping distinguish emergencies from conditions like sleep apnea. Dr. Lindsey Rosman, assistant professor of medicine at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, noted to CNET that requiring stillness alongside an oxygen drop is a smart way to cut down false alarms and improve reliability, though she also warned that alerting people to unverified life-threatening events can drive health anxiety and hypervigilance.
Availability and Regulatory Status
While the Pixel Watch 5 is available for pre-order and scheduled for an August 20 release starting at $399, US users will have to wait for the safety feature. According to Android Headlines, the feature has not yet been cleared or evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration and requires approval before it can be pushed to US users.

Instead, the tool is launching in select European markets, including the UK, Austria, Denmark, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, and Switzerland. Google has confirmed that the feature will also be brought to the Pixel Watch 4 via a software update for owners in supported countries. Google states that the feature is not intended to diagnose or treat medical conditions and is not designed for people with preexisting respiratory conditions.
