In the Coloradoon Thursday, October 18, 2023, a cat located in the area of Meyer Ranch Park, at the intersection of Turkey Creek Road and Highway 285, tested positive for over. This is the first case of plague in the Jefferson County This year. The cat was taken to the vet with a fever and swollen lymph nodes, but no respiratory symptoms, and was put on antibiotics.
Cats can contract the plague from a flea bite, a rodent scratch or bite, or the ingestion of a rodent. Dogs are not as susceptible to plague, but they can catch and carry plague-infected rodent fleas.
Jefferson County health officials have issued the following recommendations:
Eliminate all sources of food, shelter and access for wildlife around the home. Do not feed wildlife. Keep the yard free of trash and litter to reduce animal habitats wild animals. People and pets should avoid contact with sick or dead wild animals and rodents. Take precautions when handling sick pets. Have sick pets examined by a veterinarian. Consult your veterinarian about flea and tick control for your pets. Prevent your pets from roaming freely outside the home, where they could s attack wild animals and bring disease with them. Do not let dogs off-leash in nature or in parks and open spaces. Where possible, keep cats indoors and do not let them wander around the neighborhood.
