Why these needs for plasma and platelets?
These two components of blood are in increasing demand today but donations remain insufficient.
Plasma is used to treat a wide variety of diseases whether they are hematological, neurological or even dermatological. It is made into medicine or delivered as an infusion. The problem is that today, France must import 65% of its plasma needs, particularly from the United States. Platelets are used in particular by people with cancer and who are undergoing chemotherapy. They need transfusion to renew their blood cells.

These plasma and platelet collections can only be done on a dedicated site. Sampling requires specific machines. At the Saint-Jean-de-la-Ruelle donation house, the goal is to increase from 46 plasma donors per week currently to 75 in the future. Astrid, in her fifties, already comes regularly to donate plasma at the donation center. “I am a former nurse and have worked with children with cancer. So I know the importance of having blood and plasma available for them“.
What are the criteria for donating plasma and platelets?
As with donating blood, you must be in good health to donate plasma and platelets. The age limit is set at 66 years compared to 71 for blood donation and you must weigh at least 55 kg. But the biggest constraint is time. For a platelet or plasma donation, you need to allow 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes of availability. ” Me, I come with my computer and a book, it’s a question of organization and above all of will” explains Grégory who gives platelets once a month at EFS Loiret.
