Player Performance Ratings: French Rugby Stars Shine in Victory – Thomas Ramos, Damian Penaud, and More

2023-10-06 22:06:00

Thomas Ramos : 6

He sends Penaud to try a school two against one (2nd minute), launching the French festival this Friday evening at the OL Stadium (60-7). He scores his opportunistically, after a feint from a kicking game. The Toulouse fullback was again present against the poles (7/8) but he was penalized for a lost aerial duel, on the hour mark. In the first period, he also missed a good opportunity to restart.

In short: Good without being radiant.

Melvyn Jaminet took over in the 62nd minute, with fluctuating success.

Damian Penaud : 6,5

What a unique player. He achieves a breakthrough of which he has the secret, after a monumental failure in the first hand, with a poorly timed foot pass for “LBB”… but he sends him a decisive ball in this way, shortly after. The competition’s top try scorer (two tonight, six in total) was brilliant on several occasions and perfect in his timing on his two goals. But he also missed a pass on a step in the 57th minute, having the ball snatched away a minute later. In short: Drink and eat with him, as often.

Gaël Fickou: 6

For his 84th selection, he didn’t have much to complain about. Stunned at the start of the second period, he conceded a penalty… but corrected this problem by stealing a ball just out of an Italian ruck. The father of the back line was also correct in the transmissions he had to make.

In short: Without embellishment or deletion.

Replaced by Yoram Moefana in the 62nd minute. The latter scored two tries, each time served by Jalibert.

Jonathan Danty: 6.5

No major action, offensively, but the La Rochelle center drew his trump card twice in defense, obtaining scratching penalties. On each percussion, we feel that it hurts. He lays down badly on a ball at the end of the match, without consequence.

In short: It did its job.

Louis Bielle-Biarrey: 7

He scored an eel-style try, quite early in the match, before being very useful and available. A good defensive return is also to his credit (26th minute). Only false note: too “light” clearance in support of Fickou (51st).

In short: Fast, timely… Not yet essential, but close.

Matthieu Jalibert: 8

A questionable choice to play with the foot in the first half, a missed penalty in the second… but he compensates for this little waste with so many brilliant shots. A solo effort thanks to his formidable support and decisive passes in spades, including a spectacular one, at the foot, for Penaud: he lit up this tepid Lyon evening.

In short: The artist Jalibert was out.

Maxime Funny : 7

His invincibility holds (18/18) and he is more than a talisman. Solid in defense, he made his long-footed play speak for itself. We expected that from him… but also an ability to set the pace which he did not have against Uruguay. It was much better this Friday, behind a dominating pack, certainly, but with the pressure weighing on his shoulders: well done.

In short: He lived up to the occasion.

Replaced by Baptiste Couilloud in the 55th minute. The LOU scrum half brought dynamism to a disjointed end to the match.

Charles Ollivon : 7.5

Captain in the absence of Antoine Dupont, he put the Italians’ heads under water, with a counterattack (5th minute) which maintained the French control. In defense (12/12 in tackling) he provided, always with his ability to make the link between forwards and three-quarters.

In short: Armband or not, Ollivon is an executive of this group.

Replaced by François Cros in the 55th minute.

Grégory Alldritt : 7

Fifteen successful tackles, none missed: in defense, he was a leader by example. With the ball under his arm, he made a lot of progress at the start of the match, a little less afterwards. He lacks dexterity on a sideline combination, the main downside.

Anthony Jelonch : 7

Rough on every impact, he was at the forefront of the fight for 80 minutes, which reflects a left knee that does not penalize him. He hits a huge stamp in the 71st minute, just before Italy saves the honor.

In short: Private Jelonch is ready for the endgame.

Thibaud Flament: 6

Valuable in defense (8/8 in tackling, in a relatively short time), he notably carried out a series of positive actions at the heart of a slight Italian highlight. As a ball carrier, on the other hand, he was discreet.

In short: Even when he doesn’t shine, his activity is at least illustrated in defense.

He gives way to Romain Taofifenua in the 45th minute.

Cameron Woki : 7,5

Author of a decisive off-load on the first try, he was also poison for the Italian touch, with his sprawling arms, whether in the air or on the ground, where he knew how to embed himself in a opposing maul. On the offensive sideline, it was also all good. An error to highlight? His imprecise pass which leads to… the Blues’ second try. It was definitely his evening and that of his team.

In short: We find very good Woki.

Win Anthony : 6,5

No breakthrough to his credit, but an efficiency in scrum which again allowed the French XV to obtain several penalties in this area. He drops a ball on an advantage that Lucu tried to play without much conviction.

In short: A rock that we have known is more spectacular in its contribution.

Replaced by Dorian Aldegheri in the 45th minute.

Peato Mauvaka : 6,5

He signed several sharp “pick and go” and ended up scoring a try, driving the tricolor truck before breaking away from it. A winning “contest” from the start of the second period but also difficulties on the sidelines, in this second act.

In short: Very strong in the game, the conquest to perfect.

Cyril Baille: 7

He improvised as a relay player on the first try, a symbol of his precious ability to make the game more fluid. The Toulouse left pillar also contributed to his team’s good scrum performance, his return to form is confirmed.

In short: He is gaining momentum at the ideal time, just before the quarter-finals, for which the Blues qualified via this success.

Replaced by Reda Wardi (55th minute).
