PlayStation Plus: prices are rising, it will sting for gamers

It’s back to school, and who says back to school says change in pricing policy. Sony Interactive Entertainment announced on Wednesday August 30 that it will increase PlayStation Plus subscription prices starting September 6. “This price adjustment will allow us to continue to deliver high quality games and value-added benefits to your PlayStation Plus subscription service.“, warns the group in a communiqué.

As a reminder, the PlayStation Plus allows, depending on the formula chosen, access to free games and online multiplayer, to benefit from discounts and exclusive content, and to store in the cloud.

In concrete terms, only customers who have taken out an annual subscription will be affected by this increase. It will impact all three offers. The basic package, the PlayStation Plus Essential, will increase from €59.99 to €71.99 per year, an increase of 20%. The intermediate offer, PlayStation Plus Extra, sees its price increase from 99.99 to 125.99 €, up 26%. Finally, the Premium offer climbs from €119.99 to €151.99 (+26%).

The new rates will only apply from the next plan renewal date, starting November 6, for those who are already subscribers. “However, any changes to membership from September 6 onwards, such as upgrading, downgrading, or purchasing additional time, will cause your plan to be updated to the new prices.“says Sony.

After the €50 price increase of the PlayStation 5 a year ago, this is bad news for gamers, who will have to put their hands in their wallets to access their console’s online services.

For the first anniversary of the new PlayStation Plus service, Sony communicated the latest figures known to date last May. The group claims 47 million players subscribed to PlayStation Plus, 14.1 million having opted for the higher levels. A figure well above the 30 million subscribers claimed by Xbox Game Pass, but not very far from the old formula of the service, which could count on 48 million subscribers at the end of 2022 (not counting the 3.2 million subscribers to PlayStation Now who have since integrated the simplified offer).
