Podcast, episode 16: Can we slow down brain aging?

We had the pleasure of welcoming Dr. David Fortin with whom we discussed the incredible complexity of the human brain, in all simplicity, because he is an excellent popularizer! He is a neurosurgeon, neuro-oncologist and full professor at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at the University of Sherbrooke, where he directs the brain tumor research laboratory.

We discussed with him the factors of brain aging and the actions that allow us to protect it and keep it healthy as much as possible. If it can reassure you, he mentioned that these frequent memory losses that plague many of us are common and can be frustrating, but that they are in most cases normal, even in our forties. .

Dr. Fortin also discussed cognitive disorders to watch for and signals to look for. He also addressed the question of whether there are differences between the brains of women and men and how these differences are expressed. Finally, the impacts of divided attention on our brain were discussed.

To learn more about the brain

In his latest book, The seasons of the brain, it segments the phases of the brain throughout life, this presentation allows us to clearly understand the development from its growth to its decline. What I also appreciated about this book was the sharing of some of the experiences he had and we can clearly feel his passion for his profession.

For those who, like me, wish to understand even better the functioning of this extraordinary organ, Dr. Fortin’s first book, The brain, a galaxy in your head, is a little more difficult to read, in my opinion, but just as interesting and well popularized. Imagine, and I quote an extract from the book: “It is said that there are as many neuronal connections in the brain as there are stars in our galaxy.”
