Podence accused of spitting on an opponent… no VAR sanction

Scorer with Wolverhampton on the lawn of Nottingham Forest (1-1) on Saturday during the 29th day of the Premier League, Daniel Podence was also noticed by a confusion with Brennan Johnson. The Portuguese seems to have spat on his opponent but despite the use of VAR, the referee did not sanction him.

Tension at City Ground. The Nottingham Forest stadium was the scene of an electric match against Wolverhampton (1-1) on Saturday as part of the 29th day of the Premier League. One of the main players in this poster without a winner is Daniel Podence. Entering the break in place of the former Monegasque Moutinho, the Portuguese striker equalized late in the game (83rd). But the Wolves player was also noticed by what looks like a very ugly gesture.

Reviewed by VAR

During an altercation with Cheikhou Kouyate at the start of extra time, Podence seems, in view of the images, to spit in the direction of Brennan Johnson, the other scorer of the game. However, despite the use of VAR and multiple slowdowns, the Portuguese international (1 selection) was not sanctioned by referee Chris Kavanagh.

Did Podence escape a red card because the VAR teams didn’t have formal proof that he had spit correctly? Hard to say. After the meeting, Brennan Johnson minimized this fact of the match: “I don’t remember it clearly, I don’t want to talk about it too much, he commented on the microphone of the BBC. I saw a movement but they (the VAR) watched it and they made their decision.”
