‘Pokémon cards’ worth more than 600 million won per sheet are attracting attention by appearing at auction.
According to the global commerce platform ebay on the 27th, a limited edition ‘1998 Pokemon Pikachu Illustrator Card PSA 8’ card was initially bid for $480,000 (approximately KRW 635.28 million).
If the deal is concluded, it will renew the highest price of a Pokemon card sold on eBay.
The ‘Pokemon Illustrator Card’ is a card given only to the 39 winners of the ‘Pokemon Illustrator Contest’ held in 1997 and 1998.
Currently, there are regarding 10 illustrator cards, which are rare items. The auction will run until 10:00 a.m. on the 7th of next month, Korean time.
Pokemon cards have already established themselves as a special financial tool. According to an eBay report, trading card sales in the US in 2021 following the COVID-19 pandemic increased by 142% compared to 2019.
‘1998 Pokemon Illustrator Pikachu PSA 7’ was sold for regarding 490 million won, and ‘2000 Pokemon Neo Genesis 1st Edition Holo Lugia #9 BGS 10’ was sold for regarding 180 million won.
Pokémon cards are one of the most actively traded categories on eBay, with 3,000 searches per hour last year. The most popular Pokemon cards sold on eBay from 2021 to 2022 are ▲Pikachu ▲Charizard ▲Eevee ▲Mewtwo.
