Poland’s President Andrzej Duda reaffirmed his friendship with the former US president at a dinner with Donald Trump in New York. “It was a friendly meeting in a very nice atmosphere,” said Duda on Wednesday evening (local time) after the encounter. Trump, who wants to move into the White House again for the Republicans in November, invited the Polish head of state to his apartment in Trump Tower.

He praised Duda before the meeting: “He did a great job and he is my friend. We had four great years together.” Trump also assured: “We are fully behind Poland.”

Duda’s meeting with Trump was frowned upon by much of the Polish public. The president, who comes from the ranks of the national conservative PiS, has never made a secret of his admiration for Trump. At the same time, EU and NATO member Poland is a close military ally of Ukraine, which is attacked by Russia, and an important hub for Western military aid to Kiev. Similar to other European countries, there are concerns in Poland that the US will reduce its support for Ukraine if Trump becomes president again.

Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk said before Duda’s visit: “In Poland, almost everyone is aware that a possible victory for Donald Trump in the US presidential election would be unfavorable for the security of Poland, Europe and the future of NATO.” Almost every speech by Trump shows his anti-Ukrainian and pro-Russian stance, Tusk continued.
