Police operation in Rio de Janeiro favela left 18 dead

A police officer is among the victims, as is a woman from a stray bullet.

A total of 18 people lost their lives as a result of a police operation carried out this Thursday in Alemao, an area made up of 13 favelas and located in the northern part of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), local media report.

According to the police version, 16 criminals died, an agent who received a neck wound and a 50-year-old woman who was inside her car, the victim of a stray bullet that, family members maintain, was shot by a police officer.

On May 24, another police operation with armored vehicles and helicopters carried out in the favela of Vila Cruzeiro, also in Rio de Janeiro, resulted in 25 deaths, becoming the second deadliest in the history of that Brazilian city.
