Police prevent march in honor of Azagaia in Maputo City – O País

Many people were injured and others arrested, today, in Maputo, when the police prevented the realization of a peaceful march in honor of the rapper Azagaia, who died on the 9th of March.

A peaceful demonstration that gave rise to an environment of measuring forces between the Police and the demonstrators who wanted to honor Azagaia.

Avenida Eduardo Mondlane should have been the meeting point for more than 500 people, who together would march through Avenida Karl Max, towards Praça da Independência, in Maputo City.

But, minutes after the scheduled time for the gathering, the police began to disperse people.

An unexpected scenario, not least because according to the organization of the event, the demonstration was previously informed to the competent authorities.

When Avenida Eduardo Mondlane proved to be unfeasible, Avenidas 24 de Julho and Avenida Ahmed Sékou Touré were alternatives. That is until the Police arrive and launch more tear gas canisters. In the face of the scenario, the way out was to run, but in that attempt, some people were injured.

At some points, the situation also hindered traffic. Even so, the population remained faithful to its objective. At a given moment, he would relax, sing hymns with messages characteristic of Azagaia’s musical themes and then return to his march.

Until the closing of this report, 4 people had been arrested. And the population had not been able to reach Praça da Independência, the destination of the march, which was policed by the PRM in coordination with the Municipal Police.
