Polish Prime Minister defeated in no-confidence vote

Warsaw: The Polish Parliament has passed a motion of no confidence against Polish Prime Minister Mathews Morawiecki. While 456 MPs participated in the poll, only 190 voted in favor of the Prime Minister.

Morawiecki’s right-wing Law and Justice Party (PIS) lost the general election in October. Following this, a motion of no confidence was introduced in the Parliament. The coalition, led by former Polish prime minister and former European Council president Donald Tusk, claimed a majority in parliament.

Donald Tusk is back as Prime Minister. Tusk was the Prime Minister of Poland from 2007 to 2014. Immediately after stepping down as Prime Minister, he became the head of the EU Council. He held the position till 2019.

Speaker Simon Holonia had earlier announced that he is preparing to find a replacement for Morawiecki and that the cabinet will be formed soon.

PiS party leader Jarosław Kaczynski, who conceded defeat, criticized the no-confidence vote as part of the smear campaign against him.

“The Prime Minister has achieved a lot for our government. I think there are social misunderstandings. But this is democracy. We accept that, but we will fight. “The anti-PIS campaigns have succeeded in convincing a large section of our society that the false reality is real,” Kakinski said.

Insinuating that Morawiecki’s downfall was caused by the intervention of foreign powers, he said his dream was for politicians to act independently of the wishes of foreign countries.
