Political Campaign Diary: Episode 26 – PS Insults, PTB Teasing, and DéFI Party Drama

2024-03-17 18:10:00

Campaign Notebook episode 26. Between the insults of the PS, the teasing around the new tax on millionaires from the PTB and the DéFI party which is tearing itself apart, the elections are getting closer. We will vote in 84 days.

Word of the week: “Asshole.” This word comes to us from a party president, the boss of the Socialists, Paul Magnette. This is the subtle declaration he made during a debate on the public channel: “We must vote for parties which take responsibilities, risks, and not for idiots like those of the PTB!”

“It shows all the arrogance of Mr. Magnette, all the contempt he has for the PTB, but also for its 25,000 members,” commented Germain Mugemangango, PTB deputy, on our set.

Ducarme VS Dedonder

Insults are a bit of a trend of the week.

Debate in parliament on Thursday on the status of reservists in the army. Very lively debate between the socialist Minister of Defense, Ludivine Dedonder and the federal deputy MR Denis Ducarme: “You continually spit your venom. And as said recently, I have had enough of bullies.”

To Denis Ducarme to respond: “I have been in this Parliament for 21 years. And never, never have I suffered what I have just suffered.”

PTB tax new formula

Time for the substantive debate of the week: the new formula PTB millionaires tax.

Raoul Hedebouw, president of the PTB, wants to tax the rich, but no longer from one million euros, but from 5 million euros. Among the socialists, we sneer.

Ahmed Laaouej, leader of the PS group in the Chamber: “It is quite spectacular to go from one million euros to five million euros. This is perhaps the sign of a rapprochement between the PTB and the MR. It’s quite surprising. We’re trying to find rational explanations for something that isn’t. So that means that, when we have three million euros of financial assets, that means that for the PTB, we’re not rich.”

Concretely, does that mean that anyone who has 4.9 million euros in their account will pay nothing with the PTB? “He will not pay anything, he will not pay. He will not be subject to this tax that we want to put forward,” responds Nadia Moscufo, PTB federal deputy.

Launch of the DéFI campaign

Finally, to finish, the good political atmosphere of the week. DéFI Congress, launch of the campaign with great fanfare this Sunday.

François de Smet, president of the party: “We have the candidates, we have the program, we have the motivation.”

But they didn’t have a few leading figures… No Didier Gosuin or former president Olivier Maingain.

The latter reacted: “I consider that I do not have to participate in a succession of procedural defects and cheating. You know, I no longer have anything to prove personally.”

Don’t forget, we vote in 84 days.
