Political dispute is escalating – now the mayoral candidate demands full publicity about the case

A political dispute in Frederikshavn Municipality, which was triggered by an attempt to provide financial first aid to Ålbæk Sports Center, is now escalating.

The dispute has reportedly already cost an administrative director his job, just as city councilors for the Liberals have tried to get the chairman of the culture and leisure committee, the conservative Peter Laigaard, knocked off his stool.

In short, the case is about the way – or the method if you will – that tried to secure Ålbæk Sports Center a municipal subsidy of DKK 250,000 at a time when the sports center was under pressure to operate after a harmonization of the subsidies for the municipality’s halls was in order.

The Liberals do not think so, where the party’s newly appointed mayoral candidate, Lone Haugaard, as the only member of the culture and leisure committee in his time, voted against sending the quarter of a million to Ålbæk.

Which, by the way, was also slowed down by municipal director Thomas Eriksen.

Ahead of the next city council meeting in Frederikshavn Municipality, Venstre is now demanding that the public and the press get full insight into the process surrounding the grant to Ålbæk Sports Center. And that municipal director Thomas Eriksen puts it on the agenda for the city council meeting as an independent item.

This is done with reference to Section 14 of the Public Disclosure Act.

Venstre has already applied for and received full access to the proceedings.

– On the basis of this information, it can be established that the political leadership in the culture and leisure committee has exerted tremendous pressure on the municipal employees, which has had negative consequences for Frederikshavn Municipality and has actually led to the resignation of at least the then director for the cultural and leisure area, writes the party in a press release with Lone Haugaard as the sender.

After studying the case files, she and the party colleagues conclude that the city council’s political majority has refrained from drawing relevant political and legal consequences from the process by only having implemented sanctions against municipal employees.

Lone Haugaard and Venstre now demand that the case also have political consequences, because the actions surrounding the support for the sports center in Ålbæk were carried out with a view to getting an illegal payment approved.

– With the proposed resolution, the Liberal Party wants the citizens themselves to be able to relate to and assess what has passed, the press release states.
