Political Interference and Worker Concerns in Molenbeek Municipal Services: A Call for Help

At the start of the week, the Molenbeek unions sounded the alarm, in common front, about political interference in municipal services. Illustration of the malaise, this Friday, the foreigners’ service will mark a work stoppage. But its workers seem to want to move up a gear by directly alerting the higher municipal spheres via a letter sent to the Molenbeek college of aldermen.

Remember, already at the end of June, the municipal council was to consider the appointment of a new head for the “demography service”. Once known, the name of the elected official worried the staff who pointed to her controversial passages in other municipal services. The vote did not ultimately take place, due to a lack of procedure.

In Molenbeek, the appointment of a head of department tenses and worries

But the subject does not stop there for the workers of the “foreign service”, who split a denunciatory letter this Thursday afternoon. On almost a page, the workers come back to “a smear campaign against our service”. They denounce in particular a former colleague, reputed to be close to the MR, who would have created a toxic climate in the service, and “damaged the proper functioning” of it. “Suddenly we were inundated with nagging questions and felt singled out.”

Then, the signatories return to the designation of their new superior. “We learned, with the greatest consternation, that it was proposed […] two candidates linked to all these elements and responsible for a large part of the malaise of our service. And to recall the various complaints filed with Cesi, which were missing from the application file.

In Molenbeek, unions grumble against “political interference and other issues”

The workers therefore launched a “call for help” to the college of aldermen. Georges Van Leeckwyck (MR), acting mayor, promises them a meeting next week. “We are aware of what is happening. We are not going to deny the Cesi report. But it goes back two or three years.” For him, the person recently appointed to the “foreign service” has worked in other services since, without posing any problem. “It is urgent to reassure, not to decide”, he concludes.
