2023-09-01 11:25:00

The entire team of Prime Minister Alexander De Croo has the date of June 9 in sight. Date of federal, regional and European elections. So what should we expect for the next few months? Will the ministers be at work or on the campaign trail? Analysis.

It is a street, it is above all a concentration of power: the rue de la loi with its number 16, the Prime Minister’s office and its number 6, the federal parliament. But 9 months before the elections, will women and men politicians think regarding government or electoral campaign?

Answer with two political scientists. On the left, Pascal Delwit, professor at the ULB. On the right, David Sinardet, professor at the VUB: a French-speaking and a Flemish.

“We are not strictly speaking in current affairs. It is a full-fledged government, at the federal level and of course at the level of the federated entities. Nevertheless for these two levels, the essential files are loop”, explains Pascal Delwit, political scientist at the Free University of Brussels (ULB).

“For the famous major reforms, I don’t think we should still have a lot of expectations. On the other hand, there is still a budgetary control that is not unimportant. an easy exercise to do, underlines Dave Sinardet, political scientist at the Vrije universiteit Brussel (VUB).

Adjusting the 2023 budget and negotiating the 2024 budget are the last major challenges at the federal level, but no more. In any case, this is the opinion of political scientists, even if Prime Minister Alexander de Croo refuses this analysis. “I’m sure that every minister will still want to do as many things as possible in the coming year. I’m not worried,” this Alexander De Croo.
