Political turning point in Montenegro | News.at

The candidate of the new party “Europe Now!”, Jakov Milatovic, clearly won the presidential election in Montenegro. The political newcomer, who is supported by the pro-Serbian camp, won around 60 percent of the voters in Sunday’s runoff. Incumbent Milo Djukanovic admitted his defeat during the ongoing count.

In Montenegro, this marks the end of an era that lasted more than three decades, in which Djukanovic determined the politics of the small Balkan country. The 61-year-old led the former Yugoslav republic to independence in 2006 and to NATO in 2017. At the same time, his rule was repeatedly overshadowed by corruption. “This victory will change Montenegro,” said the 36-year-old election winner. He promised an end to crime. He wants to speed up the EU accession talks, which Montenegro has been conducting for eleven years.
