FPÖ chairman Herbert Kickl has a new proposal for dealing with politicians’ salaries. In its session before the end of the year, the National Council should freeze them not only at the federal level but also at the state level, he suggested in the ORF “summer talks” on Monday. This could only come about with a two-thirds majority. He therefore invited the ÖVP and SPÖ to support a corresponding application.
The idea of a zero wage round for top politicians at state level had recently led to discussions in the FPÖ. Party leader Herbert Kickl wanted to implement a zero-wage round not only at the federal level, but also at the state level. In Salzburg and Upper Austria, however, the ÖVP-FPÖ state governments decided to adjust their own salaries to inflation in accordance with the federal government’s proposal.
Salzburg’s FPÖ leader Marlene Svazek recently argued that the mayor and deputy mayor would also depend on state politics. Kickl now argued that his proposal would rule this out. The decision on politicians’ salaries is always made at the end of the year in the National Council with a constitutional majority. The application of the FPÖ should only affect the coming year. Then you have to “re-evaluate”.
In the fight against inflation, but also against the labor shortage, Kickl once again advocated a statutory minimum wage – if the social partners don’t bring it about. This must be at least 2,000 euros gross. Among other things, he cited the high tax burden as a reason why many EU citizens are not interested in jobs in Austria. But in Austria, too, training must be more targeted.
Kickl was asked again how he feels about the identities. The FPÖ boss compared them to other NGOs such as Greenpeace or Global 2000, whose projects would also be supported in individual cases. However, the motto above all of the ÖVP is: “If the citizen becomes uncomfortable, brand him as right-wing extremist.” The protection of the constitution has to protect the constitution and not “left-wing pseudomorality”.
Kickl’s attitude towards climate protection has also remained unchanged. Even the climate council (“something similar to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in the whole climate debate”) cannot make any scientifically sound statements about the development of the weather. A complete overhaul of the system would only destroy the economy and support China, believes the liberal. The population is “supervised” by political elites.
Kickl still has no problem with the historically charged term “People’s Chancellor”, which he would like to be after the next election. He was not thinking of Adolf Hitler, but of Leopold Figl, he asserted. “That means nothing other than a chancellor from the people, for the people.” Automatic referendums after successful referendums would continue to be a coalition condition.
There was again criticism of Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen, who had indicated that he did not want to swear in a government with Kickl. But he doesn’t see an obstacle in such an attitude on the part of the head of state: “I don’t want to disappoint the Federal President. The truth is that you don’t need a mandate from the Federal President to form a government.” It is about a majority in the National Council.
Kickl also criticized the setting of the interview series in the ORF “summer talk”. The Members’ consulting room in Parliament “doesn’t offer the best ambience for this” and has “the harsh charm of a Stasi interrogation room”.
