Pope designates Monseñor Alberto Ortega Martín as Apostolic Nuncio of Venezuela

The Vatican announced on Tuesday, May 14, that Pope Francis has appointed Monsignor Alberto Ortega Martín, titular archbishop of Midila, as Apostolic Nuncio to Venezuela.

Monsignor Ortega Martín, who has been the Apostolic Nuncio in Chile since 2019, will fill the vacancy left in 2021 by Monsignor Aldo Giordano, who before his death was appointed as the representative of the Holy See to the European Union.

Born in Madrid, Spain, in 1962, the new Venezuelan nuncio was responsible for the Vatican embassies in Jordan and Iraq. He was ordained a priest on April 28, 1990, holds a degree in Canon Law, and joined the diplomatic service of the Holy See on July 1, 1997.

Throughout his career he has worked for the Pontifical Representations in Nicaragua, South Africa and Lebanon, as well as in the Section for Relations with States of the Vatican Secretariat of State.

On 1 August 2015, Pope Francis appointed him Archbishop of Midila and Apostolic Nuncio to Jordan and Iraq, and he was ordained bishop on 10 October of that same year.

The appointment of Monsignor Ortega Martín as nuncio in Venezuela comes days following Pope Francis received the credentials of the Venezuelan ambassador to the Vatican, Franklin Mauricio Zeltzer Malpica, who had been appointed since February of this year.
