2023-07-09 11:22:01

Pope Francis announced today (07.09.2023) the creation on September 30 of 21 new cardinals from around the world, among these three Argentines, such as the new prefect for the Doctrine of the Faith, Víctor Manuel Fernández, a Venezuelan and a Colombian.

The other two Argentines are the Archbishop of Córdoba, Monsignor Ángel Sixto Rossi, and the Capuchin Luis Pascual Dri, confessor of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Pompeii but who, being over 80 years old, might not participate in an eventual conclave.

The archbishop of Bogotá, the Colombian Luis Rueda Aparicio, and the Venezuelan Diego Padrón Sánchez, archbishop emeritus of Cumaná and also over 80 years of age, will also receive the purple at the consistory.

“Their provenance expresses the universality of the Church that continues to proclaim God’s merciful love for all men on earth,” the pope said, following his weekly Sunday Angelus prayer from the window of the Apostolic Palace in St. Peter’s Square.

The consistory will be the ninth for the creation of cardinals under Pope Francis, who is in the 10th year of his papacy.
