BC Lions Dominate Montreal Alouettes 35-19: Vernon Adams Jr. Shines Against Former Team

Vernon Adams Jr. had 283 passing yards against his former team as the BC Lions defeated the Montreal Alouettes 35-19 on Sunday night.

Adams, who made two stints with the Birds, the last between 2018 and 2022, has completed 20 of his 25 attempts from the air. He threw a touchdown pass and an interception for the Lions (4-1).

He was supported by running back Shaun Shivers, who was making his career debut in the Canadian Football League. Shivers had 63 yards on 14 carries and caught two passes for 73 yards.

“We expected it,” Lions head coach Rick Campbell said of Shivers’ performance. He looked like this during practice. He made eyes widen due to his speed and agility. »

The Lions rallied after suffering their first setback this season last week. The defense had six sacks, including two by CFL point guard Mathieu Betts, and the special teams added a major.

“I knew we were going to come back strong,” Adams said. I wanted to start the game by scoring a touchdown. When it did, I was happy because that’s what we wanted. »

The Alouettes’ defense (2-2) hadn’t allowed more than 17 points in each of its first three games of the season, but it found the right match on Sunday.

“We didn’t play at our best, that’s for sure,” said Alouettes head coach Jason Maas. There were some unusual mistakes. We have to reduce the penalties, it was a problem during this game. »

Quarterback Cody Fajardo had 24 of 38 passes grabbed for 280 yards. He had 57 rushing yards on eight carries, including one for a touchdown.

The Montreal troops have lost three of their last four meetings against the Lions and they have won only nine of their 41 visits to BC Place.

The Alouettes will return to action Friday by hosting the Toronto Argonauts at Percival-Molson Stadium.

Some costly mistakes

Disaster was averted by the Lions early in the game. On the second offensive play, Adams saw his pass intercepted and returned to the end zone by Marc-Antoine Dequoy, but an illegal contact penalty nullified the defensive touchdown.

Adams pulled himself together by orchestrating a fine offensive drive and Dominique Davis, a former Alouettes player, scored a major on a one-yard run.

Fajardo replied to his opponent by putting the Alouettes at the goal after passing 20 yards to Austin Mack. The quarterback himself crossed the last yard separating him from the end zone.

The Lions regained the lead in the second quarter, when Shivers scored a major on a three-yard run. The Montreal formation however reduced the gap to 14-10 on their next possession, when David Côté managed a field goal from 47 yards.

The match then tipped due to the special teams.

The Alouettes had just blocked a punt from Stefan Flintoft and were in position to attempt a 43-yard field goal, but Woody Baron blocked the attempt and Jalon Edwards-Cooper brought the ball back the other side for a hit.

After a field goal for each team, the Lions returned to the locker room at halftime with a 24-13 priority.

The Lions dealt a blow to their opponents by scoring a touchdown in their first offensive sequence in the second half. Adams joined Jevon Cottoy for a 20-yard touchdown. The defense then limited the Alouettes to a field goal of 13 yards in the paying zone.
