Lisbon: Luxury car brand Porsche has apologized for editing and removing Portugal’s famous Christ sculpture from an ad it released. The image of Jesus Christ was removed from an advertisement released to celebrate 60 years of the Porsche 911 company. Following this, there was a strong protest against the video, including on social media.

The company later apologized and released a new clip featuring the Christ sculpture. There has been widespread criticism on social media that the ad ignores the city of Lisbon, Portugal and that the removal of the landmark statue was wrong. The German company that produced the ad uploaded a video of the entire statue to YouTube as the incident sparked controversy.

The famous statue of Jesus Christ stands facing the Targus River, which divides the Portuguese cities of Almada and Lisbon. The monument was built in 1959 to express gratitude for saving Portugal from the destruction of World War II by remaining neutral in the war.

The controversial editing occurs at the 44th second of the two-and-a-half-minute ad. The 92-foot-tall sculpture disappeared as a Porsche drove past the bridge and river backdrop. Meanwhile, the concrete pedestal on which the sculpture is placed was visible. The company apologized after this editing went viral on social media.
