Meanwhile, civil protection crews successfully contained a rural fire in Fornos de Algodres as officials maintain high alerts.
Portugal is confronting an intensifying spell of hot and dry weather that has pushed wildfire danger ratings to their highest levels across wide swaths of the interior and the Algarve.
Maximum Risk Concentrated Across Nine Districts
The municipalities facing the most severe threat belong to interior northern and central districts, alongside the southern Algarve region. The districts under maximum alert include Vila Real, Bragança, Viseu, Guarda, Castelo Branco, Coimbra, Santarém, Portalegre, and Faro. The IPMA places almost all concelhos of the country in “very high” and “high” danger, with the exception of some municipalities near the coastline of the districts of Braga, Porto, Aveiro, Leiria, Lisboa, and Setúbal. The perigo de incêndio rural determined by the IPMA has five levels, which range from reduced to maximum. These calculations are obtained from air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and the amount of precipitation in the previous 24 hours. The calculation is also made based on values observed at 13:00 each day.
Intense Heatwave Fuels Nationwide Threat
In the beginning of the week, the IPMA warned of the approach of a long period with hot and dry weather, with maximum temperatures reaching values between 40 and 43°C in the Tejo Valley and the Alentejo. Évora and Beja were recorded as the hottest cities reaching 38 degrees, while Faro reached 35, Lisbon hit 33, and Porto reached 26. In separate daily forecasts, temperatures were expected to drop by 6ºC to 10ºC on Friday before rising again. Minimum temperatures vary across regions, and winds have been forecasted to blow weak to moderate from the northwest, becoming moderate to strong with gusts up to 60 km/h in the coastal region north of Cabo Raso and in the highlands, and moderate from the east in the Algarve.
Crews Contain Rural Fire in Fornos de Algodres
Amid the high-risk conditions, emergency responders battled a rural fire that broke out in the locality of Vila Ruiva, within the municipality of Fornos de Algodres in the Guarda district. The alert for the fire, which deflagrated in the afternoon on Friday, was given at 16:53. The rural fire was given as dominated on Saturday, August 08, according to a civil protection source speaking to the Lusa agency.
An Autoridade Nacional de Emergência e Proteção Civil (ANEPC) source, via Lusa agency, stated that operations had progressed favorably through the night and the fire was brought under control.
According to information published on the ANEPC website, 318 operational personnel remained on the ground supported by 84 vehicles to manage the aftermath and secure the location.
Outlook and Extended High-Risk Period
Weather projections indicate that the elevated wildfire danger will persist at least until Monday, a day in which practically the entire country will remain under maximum or very high danger. Concelhos in the interior districts of Vila Real, Viseu, Bragança, Guarda, Coimbra, Santarém, Portalegre, Castelo Branco, and Faro continue under close watch as the Institute warns that more than 60 concelhos remain in maximum danger of rural fire.
