Long before maritime myths popularized the Kraken, the oceans were governed by massive, predatory cephalopods. According to a study published in the scientific journal Science and led by researchers at Japan’s University of Hokkaido, early ancestors of modern octopuses reached lengths of up to 20 meters, dominating the Late Cretaceous seas between 100 and 72 million years ago.

Rewriting Marine Paleontology with High-Resolution CT Scans

For decades, paleontologists operated under the assumption that soft-bodied invertebrates like octopuses played minor, secondary roles in prehistoric marine ecosystems. Traditional fossil records heavily favor organisms with rigid mineralized skeletons or hard shells, leaving soft-bodied creatures to decompose rapidly before they can fossilize. To pierce this historical blind spot, a team from the University of Hokkaido turned to a durable anatomical feature with a high potential for fossilization: the jaw.

Focusing on fossilized remains discovered in Japan and on Canada’s Vancouver Island, the researchers utilized high-resolution computed tomography (CT) scans alongside artificial intelligence tools. These techniques allowed the team to extract and examine preserved jaws belonging to an extinct group of finned octopuses known as Cirrata, specifically identifying specimens from the species Nanaimoteuthis jeletzkyi and Nanaimoteuthis haggarti.

Uncovering an Apex Predator Strategy Through Jaw Wear Patterns

Analyzing the size, morphology, and unique wear patterns of these ancient jaws provided concrete behavioral insights. The fossilized mandibles displayed severe structural damage including chips, deep scratches, and major cracks. This high degree of erosion points directly to immense biting force and an aggressive predation style.

“Nuestros hallazgos sugieren que los primeros pulpos eran depredadores gigantes que ocupaban el tope de la cadena alimentaria marina en el Cretácico,” stated co-author Yasuhiro Iba of the University of Hokkaido. Iba added that based on exceptionally well-preserved fossil jaws, these animals reached total lengths of nearly 20 meters, potentially surpassing the scale of major marine reptiles active during the same geological epoch.

Further emphasizing the sheer scale of mechanical stress endured by these jaws, Iba noted that in well-developed specimens, up to 10 percent of the jaw tip eroded relative to total length. This erosion rate exceeds what scientists observe in modern shelled-prey-consuming cephalopods, signaling repeated, forceful interactions with tough prey.

Cognitive Complexity and Asymmetric Predation

Beyond raw physical dimensions, the fossil record uncovered a striking behavioral anomaly: asymmetrical wear across the jaws. Across the examined specimens, one side of the biting structure consistently showed heavier erosion than the other. This physical imbalance suggests a strong behavioral preference to favor one side during hunting maneuvers.

In modern ethology, this phenomenon is categorized as lateralization—an asymmetric behavioral trait typically tied to advanced cognitive processing in contemporary fauna. The study’s authors propose that these prehistoric cephalopods deployed complex behavioral strategies, which, combined with powerful mandibles and the evolutionary loss of a heavy external shell, allowed them to compete directly with large marine vertebrates at the top of the food web.

Expanding the Cephalopod Timeline

This research fundamentally shifts our understanding of marine biodiversity timelines. The discoveries push back the known fossil record for finned octopuses by about 15 million years and extend the broader octopus lineage timeline by nearly 5 million years. By anchoring these giants in the Cretaceous period over 100 million years ago, the findings confirm that the evolutionary path of cephalopods included an era where they reigned as dominant, high-level marine predators.
