Lower Austria’s Sports Provincial Councilor Udo Landbauer & Co. get an idea of the preparations on site.
It’s still empty, the event hall in the Multiversum Schwechat. That will change in just a few days. Because the preparations for the Davis Cup Austria against Portugal on 15./16. September in the multifunctional event complex on the outskirts of Vienna are already in full swing. On Friday, September 8th, the construction on site will start, as the players from both nations should expect a new and perfectly laid hard court (Rebound Ace Synpave) for the first training sessions on Monday, September 11th. And the fans a pretty hall in which up to 1800 visitors could cheer on the international match with the ÖTV men’s team.
SPORTLAND Niederösterreich, the municipality of Schwechat, the Multiversum Schwechat and the Austrian Tennis Association are already pulling together during the preparations to offer both teams and the spectators the best possible sporting event experience. This Thursday, therefore, Lower Austria’s Sports Provincial Councilor Udo Landbauer, MA, Schwechat Deputy Mayor Christian Habisohn, the operator of Multiversum Schwechat Mag. Lukas Grünbichler and ÖTV Managing Director Economy Thomas Schweda & Co. took a picture of the location during a joint photo session on site and the local conditions as well as the planning progress.
“I am particularly pleased that we have brought the Davis Cup to Lower Austria for the second year in a row,” said Landbauer on the sidelines of the joint meeting. “Extraordinary events like this promote sport in Lower Austria and offer our compatriots, especially our youngest, the first-hand experience of international tennis class. In addition, hosting the Davis Cup once again underlines the positive development of our federal state towards becoming an absolute tennis stronghold. I’m looking forward to high-class tennis matches in front of a great backdrop and I wish all visitors a great experience in Schwechat.” It was a special concern of ÖTV Managing Director Schweda to “say a heartfelt thank you to SPORTLAND Niederösterreich, the municipality of Schwechat and the Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, Public Service and Sport (BMKÖS), who are again providing us with active and financial support for the event, as well as the Multiversum Schwechat team. We are really looking forward to once again being able to offer Austrian tennis fans a high-class tennis event – and of course we hope that Jürgen Melzer’s men will win.”
Melzer hopes that Ofner and Thiem will recover quickly
From a sporting point of view, a less than pleasant US Open night is behind the local tennis fans. While Dominic Thiem even had to give up in the second individual round due to gastrointestinal problems, Sebastian Ofner pinched his shoulder when he lost in the night session. And Austria’s proven Davis Cup doubles Alexander Erler and Lucas Miedler also dropped out early in New York. But the focus will quickly turn to the future, as the next important event is imminent with the fight for a place in the qualifying round for the Davis Cup Finals 2024.
ÖTV sports director and Davis Cup captain Jürgen Melzer is still optimistic about the international match: “Of course it’s a shame that Sebastian and Dominic were knocked out at the US Open. We hope that both of them will recover quickly and that they can help us in the Davis Cup, in full possession of their strength.” Thiem had previously clearly beat number 27 in the world in three sets with Kazakh Alexander Bublik and won his first grand Slam match success recorded since the Australian Open 2021: “The form would be right in and of itself,” said Melzer. Who was also pleased that Ofner had previously won a possible Davis Cup test against Portugal’s current number one Nuno Borges: “That’s certainly a good sign with a view to the Davis Cup.”
Melzer will only officially announce his nomination for the encounter with Portugal on Wednesday, September 6th, during a media event in Vienna’s inner city. The team sponsor of Austria’s men’s national team will also be presented there.
