Safeguard living memory and tell the story of the creation of the canton of Jura. Here are the main motivations which pushed Jacques Daucourt and Patrick Buchwalder to co-direct a feature film. Entitled “Struggle and dramas for freedom”, the film recounts the events linked to the activities of the Bélier Group, from its creation in 1962 to the self-determination plebiscite of 1974. Spectators will be able to discover around fifteen unpublished interviews with witnesses of the period, expanded and interspersed with archive images, some of which are also previously unpublished. It was also important to the co-directors to return to two tragic episodes from this period, namely the death of Maurice Wicht and the accident of André Bélet in Courtemaîche.

One of the objectives of “Struggle and drama for freedom” is to seize the opportunity to preserve the living memory of people who lived or even participated in the fight for freedom of the canton of Jura. The feature film also intends to “revive all these memories” and “explain to Jura youth how this canton was created”. According to Patrick Buchwalder, “at school level or in families, we no longer talk about the Jura question (…) the goal, then, is for it to be disseminated in school environments”.

A modest start

Jacques Daucourt made several films in his career as an “amateur director” to use his own expression. Passionate about cinema since adolescence, the co-director was a member of the Caméra Club Jura for nearly 35 years and even president of this association from 2017 to 2021. The feature film project, presented this Thursday in Porrentruy, is d It initially started from a service rendered to a second-hand dealer. “I was contacted by Didier Oeuvray who discovered super 8 films at the home of a resident of Boncourt. He asked me to scan them. In this batch of films, there were two films shot on June 23, 1974 (…) and the funeral of Maurice Wicht. (…) I said to myself, we’re going to make a short documentary of around ten minutes. And this documentary was transformed.” It was by discussing with Patrick Buchwalder that the project took on more scope.
