US President Joe Biden traveled to Florida to see the devastation caused by Hurricane Idalia. After touring the area, Biden received a situation report from local officials in Live Oak. The city was badly hit by the hurricane. Biden said no sane person could doubt that climate change is happening. He promised the victims of the storm assistance from the federal government.
“You can count on your country and we will stand by your side until the job is done,” Biden announced. According to the US government, 1,500 federal aid workers are deployed in Florida and more than 1.3 million meals have been served.
Biden did not meet with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who is also one of the Republican presidential candidates, as originally planned. A DeSantis spokesman said the governor has no plans to meet with Biden because “the mere security preparations that such a meeting would entail would disrupt ongoing recovery efforts.”
Biden was not disappointed. “No, I’m not disappointed. He may have had reasons. But he helped us plan where to go where it would be least disruptive,” the president said.
Tropical storm Idalia swept across Florida last week, but was less destructive than feared. There was one fatality, temporary power outages and damage to infrastructure. Idalia made landfall as a Category 3 out of 5 hurricane, then quickly lost strength over land and eventually moved on to Georgia and South Carolina.
