Washington DC – President Joe Biden said the US would support efforts to prevent the Israel-Hamas conflict from escalating into a regional war and ensure full protection for civilians. Biden said most of the people living in Gaza are innocent Palestinian families and have no connection to Hamas.
Biden spoke by phone with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas for the first time since last week’s attack by Hamas, pledging his full support for humanitarian efforts in Gaza. Meanwhile, Abbas urged Biden to immediately open a safe route for humanitarian aid to Gaza. Medical equipment, water, electricity and oil must be distributed to Gaza.
President Biden condemned Hamas’ attacks on Israel and reiterated that Hamas does not stand for the dignity and self-determination of the Palestinian people.
The president also spoke with leaders about coordinating with the United Nations, Egypt, Jordan and other countries in the region to provide water, food and medical care to all civilians.
