Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, accompanied by Hawaii State Governor, Josh Green, and his wife, Jaime Green, note, in one of theHonolulu Star-Advertiser, the damage inflicted by the fires in the town of Lahaina, on the island of Maui. The American president interrupted his vacation to make a long-awaited visit to the island most affected by fires on Monday, August 21, which killed 115 people, while 800 people are still missing.

“The ravages are overwhelming”, said the Democrat at a press conference, reports the newspaper of the state capital, Honolulu, on its site. Joe Biden also praised the “remarkable resilience” inhabitants. “The whole country is on your side”, he assured them during a visit that lasted six hours.

The American president immediately addressed the issue of material reparations. The Federal State will ensure “whatever it takes, as long as it takes”, the reconstruction of cities ravaged by the flames.

Residents “displeased”

“Federal authorities say they have allocated more than $8.5 million to Maui residents, including $3.6 million for relocation, assistance that has benefited 8,000 families,” continue l’Honolulu Star-Advertiser in another article.

And it is on this compensation mechanism that the first criticisms of the management of the disaster by the public authorities are directed. In another article, theHonolulu Star-Advertiser report of inhabitants “disappointed” of not being able to apply for federal aid, their identity papers having disappeared in the flames.

The daily had already criticized, on August 11the prevention methods implemented: “Maui County authorities […] contented themselves with a series of sometimes confusing social media posts that only reached a very small audience.”
