The president of Chile, Gabriel Boricannounced this Thursday the expulsion of foreigners in an irregular situation with a pending arrest warrant from the country, within a maximum period of five days. The order has already been issued to police authorities, who must comply with it to control crime rates and public insecurity in the nation.

“Regarding foreigners who are in an irregular situation and have not completed voluntary registration, even if they do not have an arrest warrant against them, the expulsion decree will be issued“said the Chilean president in a ceremony, in which he presented a plan to strengthen territorial control tasks.

As recalled, the Boric government had proposed a biometric registration plan for irregular foreigners this 2023, most of whom are from Venezuela. Until the closure of that process, only 127,000 people managed to complete their data. The rest must withdraw from the South American country.

Chilean opposition response

The right-wing opposition threatened to start a political trial against the Minister of the Interior and Security, Carolina Toháonly if the expulsion of 12,000 irregular migrants is not completed before the end of the year.

It should be noted that, since 2017, Chile has registered a large increase in the arrival of foreigners from Venezuela. Thousands of them managed to cross the border on foot through Bolivia or Peru, or clandestinely.

Migrant dies at the Chilean border trying to enter

This Monday, November 27, the Chilean Police informed the press about the death of a 63-year-old man of Venezuelan origin, whose body was found on the border between Chile and Bolivia, near the northern town of Colchane, about 2,000 kilometers from the capital.

According to the first reports, the man’s death would have been due to natural causes, but the intervention of third parties is not ruled out, considering that the wetlands where he was found are used by ‘coyotes’ to enter migrants in an irregular situation from Bolivia to Chile.
